Greenway

A hiking and cycling route to enjoy all year round, but that offers us a fairytale scenery during the fall.

The old via ferrata converted into a magnificent tourist resource. 21 km, ideal for walkers and cyclists.

The old Silver Route railway that connected Extremadura with the north of Spain was closed in 1985. Today, this obsolete route has become a magnificent tourist product that can be enjoyed by all members of the family (from the youngest to the oldest). The greenway of the Ambroz valley is a 21 km route that goes from Hervás to Béjar. It is a very comfortable stretch (made without great unevenness, following the old train tracks) that can be done at any time of the year but that becomes an incredible experience during the autumn, when the landscape of the valley of the Ambroz is covered with the chromatic variety of its famous magical autumn.

What are Greenways?

The name Vías Verdes (Green Routes) reflects the philosophy of recovering disused railway infrastructures. Little by little they are being converted into cycling and hiking routes, all coordinated by the Fundación de Ferrocarriles Españoles (Spanish Railway Foundation). These routes preserve the beauty of the old trains and their infrastructures have been respected and improved in some cases. Only the old rails have disappeared and today they are passable on foot or by bicycle.
