If Badajoz has the largest Alcazaba in Europe, in the case of Merida, it can boast of having the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula. This one was finished in the year 835 according to an Arabic inscription at its entrance that also speaks of its use as a refuge by Abd-al-Rahman, son of Al-Hakam.
It was erected after literally razing the houses and streets of Augusta Emerita that have been preserved under its surface. Likewise, its powerful wall facing the Guadiana River was built with reused remains of other monuments and a multitude of funerary cupae. You can not miss this view, that of the Roman city discovered and preserved and the Guadiana River at the same time on the wall.

Both buildings were erected in the first century. First the Amphitheater, inaugurated in the year 8 B. C., was the scene of fights between gladiators, wild beast hunts and fights between wild and exotic animals, with a capacity of 15 to 16 thousand spectators.
Then the Theater, between 16 and 15 B.C., in the capital of Augusta Emerita in the province of Lusitania. The original capacity was about six thousand spectators distributed according to their social status. In both buildings the entrance to the stands was through vomitoriums and you can not miss the tour of one of them at night while you get to your seat to watch a play of the International Festival of Classical Theatre of Merida.

It was once said that it was a miracle that the aqueduct remained standing. This imposing building is one of the many witnesses that the Roman Empire left in the city of Merida. It may date from the Julio-Claudian or Flavian period, although its construction is dated around the 1st century. It served to supply water to the city of Augusta Emerita at its entrance from the west, coexisting with three other aqueducts that supplied water to the population in different places.
This impressive work overcame the obstacles of the terrain, sometimes buried and sometimes, as at this point, raising the water channel above the ground, for which an imposing granite and brick arcade was built.
