The Alcazaba of Badajoz has the longest walled enclosure of Spain with a length of 6,541 meters of wall which, in turn, makes it the largest Alcazaba in Europe occupying an area of 8 hectares. It was ordered to be built by Abd-al-Ramman Ibn Marwan, founder of Badajoz in the year 875 and had in its interior an important hamlet that was maintained until the fifteenth century and up to three mosques. It suffered several reforms, the most important in Almohad times and reached its greatest splendor during the Aphtasid Dynasty. Of marked defensive character, it is surrounded by the Guadiana River and the Arroyo Risillas along its east and southwest front. The Muslims kept it for almost four centuries in their power until it was conquered by Alfonso IX.

The largest temple in the province of Badajoz is the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. Its construction began in the 13th century after the conquest of the city by the Christians, following the orders of Alfonso X "The Wise". The work was slow and was not completed until the 15th century , although additions continued to be made until the 18th century.
It is a place of prayer for Christians but, in general, for the visitor it is a place that inspires tranquility and immense peace. Either by the interior atmosphere or by its marked Gothic style, it will transport you to another era and invite you to sit for a while, whether you are of any religious creed or none, to think and reflect if only because we live so fast.
