Impressive castle on the highest point of Sántibañez el Alto
Open map Santibáñez el Alto (Cáceres), España
The Castle of Santibáñez el Alto has the nickname of Fortaleza San Juan de Mascoras. It is located in the Sierra de Gata and probably its origin is prior to the twelfth century as it dates from an earlier Islamic fortification.
Its geographical position is strategic given its proximity to the Portuguese border, just 50 km in a straight line. The construction was done taking advantage of the rock of the hill on which it sits.
Ithas an air between gloomy and mysterious as it was used as a cemetery until a few decades ago, still retaining some crosses and signs of that use. Also striking inside is the large number of "stonemason's marks" with which the ashlars with which the castle is built are marked.
How to get there? The entrance to the castle is at Calle La Villa number 11.
