Route of the Pylons

Los Pilones is one of the best known attractions of the Jerte Valley. This is a short route, round trip, that allows us to visit this part of the waterfall.

Open map Cabezuela del Valle (Cáceres), España

Unofficial route that allows us to visit the Pilones del Valle del Jerte.

The ascent to the Pilones is something that every visitor should do, at least in some of his visits to the Jerte Valley. Los Pilones is a natural accident and occurs when the gorge passes through a granite area on its way to the Jerte River. This stream has caused a deep erosion over thousands of years on the granite rock, sculpting large pools that visitors use as a bathing area in summer. But it is also a spectacle at any time of the year, especially when it rains and the water hits the rocks with such force that it causes fear.

This route that we propose takes advantage of a small section of another much larger route, called Route of the Gorge of Hells (which is just the gorge where the Pylons are located). Therefore, we will park in the area designated for this purpose at the entrance to the nature reserve of the Garganta de los Infiernos (which is paid, by the way), and we will follow this route, in a climb of about 3 km, to the area of the Pilones. Once we have seen the Pilones and have taken lots of photos, instead of continuing the other route, we will return by the same path to our vehicle, totaling a total of approximately 6 km. Next we see the data of the route.

We can circulate it

The climb is very nice but tiring due to the unevenness, especially in the first 1000 meters. If, on the way back we are a little married, we can return by the track (just do not deviate by the path that is marked about 600 meters after leaving behind the Pilones). The descent is a wide track for vehicles (duly authorized) that is very comfortable and relaxing. Going down here has a good and a bad part. The good part has to do with the total absence of danger and the viewpoint that we will find shortly after avoiding the crossing (and that will provide us with magnificent views), the bad part is that the rest of the descent does not have the beautiful views that accompany us throughout the ascent.

This is a NON-approved route, round trip (or circular if we return by the track) to visit this place so famous in the Jerte Valley. We will take advantage of the signaling of the Route of the Gorge of the Hells that arrives to this place and continues ascending (we will stay in the Pilones and at the end of the visit, we will return by the same path to the starting point). This route takes place entirely in the Natural Reserve of the Garganta de los Infiernos, where we can enjoy a very cool mountain route, passing through wooded routes (oak groves) that will provide us with beautiful views and magnificent landscapes.
